Day 3 - Mount Vernon to Howard

Tuesday, four walkers gathered to start the nine mile hike from Mount Vernon, thru Gambier and on to Howard on the Kokosing Gap Trail. A light dusting of snow on the ground and flurries in the air, the four looked like a cross between the Michelin Man and the kids in "A Christmas Story", bundled from head to toe.
Knox County Parks rep Doug McLarnan welcomed the marchers, and Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis thanked the walkers for helping Children's Hospital. Mayor said Nationwide Children's Hospital helped his daughter overcome problems with spina bifida in the 1970's, and she is now a healthy, happy adult. He said the staff at Children's "knew what they were doing" while treating her.
The marchers then started off and had the trail to themselves nearly the entire way. (No one else wanted to be out in the below freezing weather.) Rumor is they wanted to stop at the Kenyon College Athletic Complex along the path for a dip in the heated pool, but Glenn Coble forgot his swim suit. The group passed near a bald eagle nesting along the river before the RV met them at "The Tunnel" in Howard after the 9 mile hike. |
