Kickoff Event – Sunday, April 6, St. Vincent Mercy Children's Hospital, downtown Toledo
Day 1: Toledo to Maumee (10 miles)
Off to a good start! Sunday morning, 84 marchers representing 13 credit unions came out on what many said was the prettiest day of the year so far. The mayor of Toledo, Carty Finkbeiner, with his dog, Scout, came to offer words of encouragement and make a personal donation to the cause.
Dr. John Scheaufele, president and CEO of the Mercy St. Vincent's Children's Hospital, inspired the crowd with his own story of being born with Cystic Fibrosis and growing up to be the leader of a children's hospital.
Paul Mercer from the League and Bill Butler from Ohio HealthCare Federal Credit Union were among those who traveled from Columbus to see us off. Carl Fauver, chairman of the Credit Union for Kids steering committee, even came all the way from Cincinnati.
Kevin Slates, of Sun Federal Credit Union (and son of Glass City Federal Credit Union CEO Mark Slates) wore the medallion on the day's march. Kevin's infant son recently spent 106 days at the Children's Hospital. Both Mark and Kevin planned to walk multiple days during the March.
Northwest Chapter president Jennifer Ferguson congratulated her team on their hard work organizing the kick-off event, and thanked Glass City Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the reception at the finish line.
Day Two, on Monday, will pick up the March in Maumee and continue on to Waterville. |
